Summer Resident Assistants at SMASH
As a SMASH RA, you will work with a team of committed, talented and high-energy professional educators and within a rigorous STEM honors academy setting at UC Berkeley. Work as an RA for the SMASH program offers the chance to supervise teens and collaborate with staff and youth to create a safe, positive and rigorous learning community. Expect an enjoyable and demanding, high energy, fast paced and hands-on work experience. You will be living on campus for 5 weeks.
Job Functions & Responsibilities
- As a member of the RA team, assume supervisory responsibility for 75 teenagers in residence; serve as a role model for responsible behavior and personal integrity; exercise good judgment;
- Communicate norms and program rules of conduct to ensure student safety, open and honest communication and responsible student behavior;
- Provide strong facilitation, effective communication and other leadership skills;
- Encourage personal, social, and academic development;
- Develop and promote appropriate leisure activities; lead by participating with students in SMASH experiences outside of the classroom;
- Participate in morning, lunch, night and “on-call” duty;
- Assist student development of a sense of self-efficacy and personal well being by actively and effectively listening, and informally advising;
- Participate in staff development activities by attending daily meetings, sharing information about students and asking for help as needed;
- Participate in training activities during training week;
- Positively represent LPFI/SMASH at all meetings as required--with staff, teachers, parents/guardians, etc.;
- Possibly write/teach an experience-based lesson plan (e.g. “How to play tennis”);
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Success Factors
- Will complete junior year by Spring of 2009, preferably in the STEM field;
- Prior RA experience in a program similar to SMASH, or in a residential
life/housing in college preferred - Experience with a group similar to SMASH in college or high school;
- Commitment to LPFI’s mission and SMASH’s goals are essential;
- Previous experience working with students from low-income and underrepresented backgrounds;
- Strong academic skills; able to tutor high school AP math and/or science; able to encourage independent learning skills;
- Able to connect with youth and uphold professional demeanor
- Able to form good working relationships with an ethnically diverse student body and staff;
- Able to work on a team;
- Willing to be hands on;
- Excellent communication and problem solving skills;
- Good sense of humor;
- Native Spanish or other foreign language fluency helpful.
Dates of Summer Academy: June 22 - July 24
Training Dates: June 16- June 19
(Move into dorm June 20, move out July 26)
Compensation for 6 weeks :
$4,000 - $4,500 – RAs
$5,000 - $6,500 – Head RAs

SMASH Program - Summer Teaching Assistants in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics Courses
This position is located on the UC Berkeley Campus with some meetings in San Francisco.
Job Functions & Responsibilities
• Assist with the instruction of the subject area during designated times; Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays;
• Must be available Mon & Wed nights during each week of the program from 7-9pm for study sessions;
• Attend 3 Saturday curriculum trainings (Dates TBA);
• Attend weekly staff meetings (TBA);
• Work collaboratively with the instructor, director, and curriculum committee;
• Tutor students in improving and excelling in the above mentioned subject areas;
• Participate and assist in supervision of all project activities and functions dealing with the class;
• Assist instructor with maintaining a class record of assignments and grades;
• Assist instructor with the written evaluations of the students at midterm and final periods;
• Assist with the instructor’s needs for successful completion of the course;
• Supervise evening and weekend activities.
Success Factors
• Two plus years of collegiate education in Math, Chemistry, Biology, or Physics preferred;
• Commitment to the SMASH mission is essential;
• Previous experience working with and tutoring underrepresented and/or low income students on the secondary level, preferably in college preparatory academic subjects;
• Excellent managerial and teaching skills;
• Ability to form good working relationships with ethnically diverse students and staff;
• Ability to assess students’ academic needs and encourage independent learning skills;
• Ability to tutor students in Math, or Science individually and in small groups;
• Native Spanish fluency desired.
Dates of Summer Academy: June 22 to July 24, 2009
Dates of Employment: June 16 – July 30, 2009
Compensation: $2,060 for 7 week period
