English Instructor
Salary: Stipend for 7 week period; $5,000

The Summer Math & Science Honors (SMASH) Academy is a six week residential academic enrichment program for bright, motivated, high school students from underrepresented populations (African-American, Mexican/Chicano/a, Tongan, Samoan, and Native American) who show an aptitude for science and math. The student participants will be recruited from designated underserved communities throughout the Bay Area and will be selected through a competitive nomination, application, and interview process. The students will spend six weeks on a college campus attending science, math, computer science, public speaking, college admissions and English classes. SMASH students will have a balance of academic training and scientific research activities to enhance their science and mathematics knowledge and capabilities. The Academy will provide accelerated classes, laboratory experiments, and an introduction to a university environment. The ultimate goal of SMASH is to increase the number of underrepresented students from underserved communities who have strong academic skills in science and mathematics, along with the confidence that will allow them to enter and achieve at competitive universities.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Current California credential in the subject area applying for (or information indicating your eligibility to receive one).
- Commitment to the Summer Math & Science Honors Academy’s mission is essential
- Previous experience working with students from low-income and underrepresented backgrounds
- Excellent classroom management and teaching skills
- Native Spanish Fluency desired.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK REQUIRED DUTIES
- Instruct subject area during designated times; Tuesdays and Thursdays (8:30 – 5:00pm)
- Must tutor one night during each week of the program (TBA 7-9pm)
- Attend 2 Saturday staff orientation/development (April and May- $100/day already included in summer stipend)
- Attend weekly staff meetings (TBA)
- Work collaboratively with the director and curriculum committee of the Academy
- Instruct students in improving and excelling in the above mentioned subject areas
- Implement imaginative and challenging accredited courses
- Design and administer pre-and post-test of mastery of subject skills and concepts
- Design a syllabus detailing assignments, readings, and assessments to be given to students during first week of class (must be completed before the first day of instruction), including course description.
- Participate and assist in supervision of all project activities and functions dealing with the class
- Maintain a class record of assignments and grades
- Complete written evaluations of their students at midterm and final periods
- In collaboration with the director and curriculum committee, create a course description in outline form, including assessment procedures, performance objectives for students, a detailed plan of concepts to be learned, method of evaluating desired outcomes, etc.
- Possibly supervise some evening and weekend activities

- Ability to form good working relationships with ethnically diverse student body and staff
- Ability to assess students’ academic needs and encourage independent learning skills
- Ability to tutor students in Math, English, or Science individually and in small groups
- Native Spanish fluency desired
DESCRIPTION OF WORK/REQUIRED DUTIES
Leadership
RAs hold leadership positions of responsibility and will need to exercise authority in some situations. As leaders in their residence, RAs are expected to do the following:
- Assume a primary leadership role, serving as role models for responsible behavior and personal integrity; exercise good judgment.
- Know and educate residents about policies, procedures, regulations, and community standards.
- Know and educate residents about the emergency (e.g., earthquake and fire) response protocols and procedures.
- Work closely with the director and all other staff members of the Academy.
- Assume a leadership role in crises (e.g., earthquake, fire, and other emergencies).
Supporting the Academy’s Mission
In support of the Academy’s mission and the academic progress of their residents, RAs are expected to do the following:
- Be knowledgeable about the general subject areas being taught in the Academy (Science, Mathematics, and English).
- Supervise and tutor students in the subject areas during tutorials (Mon. — Fri. 7:00 — 9:00pm).
- Help create residential environments that promote academic inquiry and discourse and are conducive to studying.
Building Community
RAs are responsible for creating a residence environment in which all views, popular and unpopular, can be voiced, heard respectfully, and fully explored. RAs are expected to do the following:
- Help establish community norms and ground rules to ensure open and honest communication and responsible student conduct.
- Be sensitive to the needs of all groups in the residence, and help residents to be aware of each others concerns.
- Plan programs and discussions about cultural background, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, race, class, gender, and other diversity issues.
- Mediate conflict and help residents to take responsibility for their residence community.
- Promote the intellectual life of the residence through formal and informal discussions about campus, national and international issues (including culture, values, and beliefs, social, political, and ethical issues).
