RobRobert Schwartz

Executive Director

Robert Schwartz was appointed Executive Director of the Level Playing Field Institute in March 2010. Prior to joining LPFI, Robert spent three years as Chief Academic Officer for Inner City Education Foundation (ICEF) Public Schools in South Los Angeles, leading the strategic expansion of the academic program from three schools with 500 students to 15 schools with almost 4,000 students. As instructional leader, Robert facilitated the curricular design of the charter organization’s rigorous academic program with the goal to prepare students to attend and compete academically at top colleges and universities.

Prior to serving as ICEF’s CAO, Robert was the founding principal at ICEF’s flagship high school, where he led its growth from 93 to 375 students. Under Robert’s direction, the first three classes achieved a 100% graduation rate with 97% accepted to four-year universities.

As a 1994 Teach for America corps member, Robert spent seven years at his placement site in East Los Angeles. He was twice named teacher of the year and was made lead teacher and science department chairperson in his second year.

Robert graduated cum laude from Binghamton University with a double major in Biology and Classical Languages, and earned his MA in Urban Education Policy Planning and Administration and EdD in Urban Educational Leadership from the Rossier School of Education at USC. In 2009, Robert was named to the African American Achievement Commission by the California State Board of Education. He is married and has four-year-old twins. [ robert AT lpfi DOT org ]

IDEAL Student Services Coordinator

provides direct and individualized support services to our IDEAL scholars who have chosen fields of study in science, technology, engineering, and math fields. She graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor's Degree in Molecular and Cell Biology, and minored in Education. She is currently beginning her Master's Degree in Endocrinology at UC Berkeley. Brateil's passion for science, education, and diversity truly ignited when she began to teach Biology 1A with the Biology Scholars Program, an undergraduate diversity program at UCB. Communications Manager

Heather works to advance LPFI’s mission and programs through communications, media relations and partnerships.

Prior to LPFI Heather was a Government and Public Affairs Consultant. She has also held positions as Government and Media Relations Manager for the Transbay Joint Powers Authority in San Francisco and Director of External Affairs for AC Transit and has represented municipalities and nonprofits in Washington, DC. Heather is a graduate of Smith College, with BAs in American Studies and Latin American Studies.

Heather is a founding Board Member of Escuela Bilingüe Internacional, a dual immersion Spanish PreK-8 school in Oakland. She lived in Costa Rica for two years where she did research and taught in a Spanish-English dual immersion elementary school.

A California native, Heather enjoys taking advantage of the beauty of the Bay Area.
She lives in the East Bay with her husband and two children.

shantinaShantina Jackson, M.A. (PhD candidate)

Assistant Director of Education Programs

As Assistant Director of Education Programs, Shantina Jackson is responsible for the operational and logistical aspects of the summer and academic year components of SMASH. In addition, she will gather and evaluate existing research on compensatory education programs with similar goals and purposes as SMASH and IDEAL.

Shantina is a native of Richmond, CA. After graduating from Pinole Valley High School, Shantina attended UCLA where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in African American Studies with an emphasis in Sociology. Immediately after graduation in June 2000, Shantina began training as a math teacher and has since been successfully employed as an Algebra and Geometry teacher and tutor in Bay Area private and charter schools. In May 2007, Shantina earned a Masters in Education from UC Berkeley where she currently continues to work towards her PhD. Shantina's research interests include race and education, historical perspectives of African American education, and the achievement gap. Shantina served as an Algebra teacher with LPFI’s SMASH program for three years, and later as its Residential Director. [shantina AT lpfi DOT org ]


Julian MartinezJulian Martinez

Academic Programs Director

A diverse journey led Julian to the Level Playing Field Institute where he will serve as the Academic Programs Director. Educationally Julian earned a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso and a Master of Science degree from the Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Professionally he has traveled domestically and internationally as a senior engineer for the Department of the Navy solving technical problems and training personnel on the operation of advanced weapon systems. Transferring these problem-solving skills to academia, he served as the director of the Minority Engineering Program at Colorado School of Mines where he created innovative retention and academic achievement programs resulting in increased graduation rates for minority students in STEM fields. At Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill California Julian developed funding proposals and acquired resources to implement the colleges’ strategic plan. In the nonprofit world, he was the Director of the Scholarship department for the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Where under his leadership the organization implemented an online applications system and awarding over seven million dollars via scholarships to students nationwide. Most recently, he consulted for Colorado Mountain College located in the Roaring Fork Valley of Western Colorado assisting in the development of programs and facilitation an interactive scholarship workshop for over 200 high school students each semester. Julian brings passion and experience to LPFI that will help us expand current academic programming nationally.

When not thinking and creating solutions Julian enjoys cooking, traveling and is an experienced Ultra marathoner.

genevieveGenevieve Negron-Gonzales, Ph.D. Candidate

IDEAL Student Services Coordinator

Genevieve provides direct and individualized support services to our IDEAL scholars through mentorship and providing resources and community-building opportunities.

Genevieve graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor's Degree in Ethnic Studies and Chicano Studies. She has a Master's degree and is currently working on a PhD in the School of Education at UC Berkeley. Her dissertation focuses on the role of ideology and consciousness in the social justice movement.

Genevieve was the co-director of SOUL, providing political, education, and community organizing training to organizations and youth of color. She has also been active in various campus and community initiatives dealing with affirmative action, ethnic studies at Cal, juvenile justice, and immigration. uliliUriridiakoghene "Ulili" Onovakpuri
Project Coordinator Workplace Programs

As Project Coordinator for Workplace Programs, Ulili Onovakpuri is responsible for providing general data gathering, research, and administrative support for all projects across the entire program.

Ulili Onovakpuri grew up in San Francisco, California. A former IDEAL scholar, she graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 2009 with a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies, with a concentration in Business and Health in Global Societies and a minor in Creative Writing. While at Cal she completed a thesis project on the rise of Medical Tourism in India. She also studied abroad, both as a part of the Semester at Sea Program, and later as a student at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, United Kingdom. Ulili has worked for the Bay Area Academy, a social worker training academy where she helped educate over 300 social workers throughout the state of California on the issues children of color face everyday growing up as foster youth. Ulili has also interned with Adaptive Path, Mozilla Corporation, and SourceForge, Inc.

lakibaLakiba Pittman, M.A., D.Min
Consultant, Ombudsperson

Lakiba's primary focus is with Level Playing Field Institute's workplace programs facilitating conversations with companies as part of our workplace programs. She is an inspirational and creative leader with expertise in global diversity, leadership and organizational development. A dynamic speaker with experience driving global citizenship, community outreach, and creativity in business initiatives, she specializes in cross-cultural communications, enhancing team performance, building trust and authentic relationships, employee relations, and survey analysis and program design. With a background of 24-years experience with hp/Agilent Technologies, she is consistently sought to lead and evangelize unique corporate and community collaborations and programs. JeremiahJeremiah Sims

IDEAL Student Services Coordinator

Jeremiah Sims grew up in Richmond, California and is the first in his family to earn a college degree. A former IDEAL scholar, he graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 2008 with a B.A. in Rhetoric with Honors. He is continuing his education at Berkeley's Graduate School of Education in the M.A./Ph.D. program: Education, Language, Literacy and Culture, for which he received the prestigious Chancellor's Fellowship for Graduate Study. RachelRachel Sims, M.A.

Education Programs Associate

Rachel provides administrative leadership and support to SMASH and IDEAL and is working to prepare these education programs for scaling to achieve national impact. Rachel grew up in Berkeley, CA and after graduating from Berkeley High, she earned a bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies Field with a focus in Comparative Studies in Management from U.C. Berkeley. As an experienced tutor/mentor to traditionally marginalized students, Rachel returned to school to obtain a master's degree in Educational Administration from San Francisco State University, in order to be counted amongst those passionate advocates for equity in education. jarvis Jarvis Sulcer, Ph.D.
Education Program Director

As Education Program Director, Jarvis Sulcer is responsible for spearheading the IDEAL and SMASH programs.  Jarvis joined LPFI in 2007, first as Academic Director for the SMASH Program.

Jarvis Sulcer received his Ph.D. in Nuclear Science and Engineering at Cornell University in 1998. He was the only African-American Male in the United States to receive a Ph.D. in his field of study that year. He graduated from Southern University in 1991 with a B.S. in Physics and a minor in Mathematics. In 2000, Jarvis received the Most Distinguished Dissertation Award from the National Society of Black Physicist at Stanford.

He worked part-time as an Assistant Professor of Engineering at Foothill Community College in addition to his full-time job as an engineer. In the past few years, Jarvis has worked in Silicon Valley in the semiconductor industry as a Quality & Reliability Engineer at Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Agilent Technologies in wireless communications. He left corporate America in 2003 to dedicate his time and talent to XCEL Educational Services, a tutorial company he co-founded in 2000.

Jarvis is originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and is a strong advocate for education and has served as a motivational and keynote speaker for several organizations in California, Louisiana and New York. He firmly believes that an understanding of Mathematics is essential to pursuing careers in the high tech industry, as well as giving all students a strong academic foundation to pursue whatever career they choose. jacquelineJacqueline Switzer
Workplace Programs Manager

As Workplace Programs Manager, Jacqueline is responsible for conducting research, managing various multi-media projects across the program, and developing content for websites, media articles, and blog posts about bias in the workplace and how to effectively remedy it.

Prior to joining LPFI, Jacqueline worked as a consultant in Booz Allen Hamilton’s Organization and Strategy practice, focusing on business process improvement, organizational design, change management, and strategic communications for both the US Government and Military. She also worked closely with the Booz Allen’s Corporate Diversity Department on a number of initiatives designed to promote a more diverse and inclusive workplace.

Jacqueline received her B.A. in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia in 2004. While a student at UVA, she co-founded an award-winning organization called Sustained Dialogue, which focuses on improving race and other contentious relations on campuses and communities through dialogue and a targeted change process sustained over time. Jacqueline’s other interests include traveling, learning and practicing foreign languages, volunteering, engaging in cross-cultural events, and exploring the Bay Area. Sumaiya TallukdarSumaiya Talukdar
Ship Coordinator

In her role as LPFI’s SHIP Coordinator, Sumaiya will be responsible for assisting IDEAL Scholars with securing summer internships as well as helping SMASH and IDEAL Scholars identify and apply for scholarships and fellowships.

Prior to LPFI, Sumaiya served as a law clerk at Coan & Lyons LLP and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta where she worked to create and preserve the housing rights of marginalized members of our society. She owes her faith in the power of education to Thurgood Marshall Academy (where Sumaiya served as an Administrative Assistant), an amazing public charter high school which has truly transformed the lives of its disadvantaged student population. She is a founding member of Bilingual Buddies, a program committed to empowerment through language exchange and has interned with Transparency International, the United States Agency of International Development and the United States Department of Commerce.

Sumaiya was born in Bangladesh and her passions include international development, traveling, and biking. She has studied, volunteered and/or worked in Europe, South and Southeast Asia and Latin America. She graduated with honors from Georgetown University and attended the Emory University School of Law where she served as the President of the International Law Society and an editor of the Emory International Law Review. Her medical database compilation and research has been published in the major cardiology journal Circulation.

ADMINSTRATIVE STAFF

CreativeKEI Creative

KEI Creative produces a wide range of media-rich solutions to strategically further LPFI’s mission. The “Creative Team” utilizes its diverse skill sets and personalities to craft high quality materials that promote LPFI's innovative approaches and thinking.

  • Sean Aquino is a Creative Producer, specializing in design, video, and he manages LPFI’s website. He is also a member of Gamelan Sekar Jaya and Hyphen Magazine
  • Jake Mix is a Graphic Designer, illustrator, and cartoonist who has worked on numerous LPFI invitations and the Corporate Leavers website. He has an insatiable appetite for comics of all stripes, and probably plays a little too much plastic guitar and board games
  • Trevor Parham is the Creative Director, managing all aspects of KEI Creative's various media projects. Trevor also teaches SMASH Tech courses and facilitates the SMASHcast youth media programs. Trevor's other interests include art, Oakland, and sunshine.
  • Eric Wong is a Creative Producer, focusing on video, and manages all aspects of video production and post-production. When he's not in the office, Eric is probably out training or filming the Brazilian martial art of capoeira here in the U.S. or in Brazil.

lilaLila Galindo

Development Associate

As Development Associate, Lila makes sure that LPFI has a healthy and steady stream of resources as it expands its programs.   She manages the administrative functions of development, and engages a network of donors by managing LPFI’s grant program and supporting events.
 
Lila joins the LPFI team with an extensive and diverse background in getting projects off the ground and creating strategic relationships. From project-management at Yahoo! to offering wellness and yoga programs at various non-profits to moonlighting as a writer and translator, Lila has lived and worked in Silicon Valley, New York City, Dallas, and Barcelona. Immediately prior to LPFI, Lila fundraised for Change Congress, supporting campaign finance reform.

The common driver is that Lila creates relationships that serve the mission of uplifting folks -- she see connections and seeks the resources.  Having both experienced and explored issues of racism and privilege, Lila cares deeply about access to and the power of education.

Lila has a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature from Smith College, and speaks Spanish, French, and Catalan.

JenelleJenelle Hawkins

Marketing and Special Events Associate

Jenelle plans, organizes, coordinates, promotes, and facilitates internal and external special events for all entities under the 543 roof. She is also assistant to Kapor Capital's Chief Investment Officer, Stephen DeBerry. Jenelle most recently worked for two years for the Consulate of Canada in San Diego, CA as Trade Commissioner Assistant. In that role, she was responsible for helping to promote Canada’s commercial and economic interests in the San Diego market. One of her final projects was the coordination of a 1000+ person event at the San Diego Zoo! Prior to that she served as Operations Manager for AMC Entertainment where she worked with film crews to optimize guest satisfaction. She is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of San Diego with a BA in Economics with departmental honors and minors in business and visual arts. She taught French to USD undergrads, a good use of her native fluency, as Jenelle grew up in the South of France. She is currently working toward an MFA in Advertising.[ jenelle AT kei DOT com ]


gregGreg Humpa, Ph.D.

Director of Administration

As Director of Administration, Greg manages the infrastructure and business affairs of Level Playing Field Institute. Since 1998, he has also been the Manager of Client Services for Klein Associates, Inc., a research, training, and consulting firm founded by Freada Kapor Klein which focuses on bias, discrimination, and harassment in the workplace.

Greg has a B.A. with highest honors in print journalism, French, and German from Creighton University; and an M.A. and Ph.D. in foreign languages and literatures from Purdue University. He was also a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Bern, Switzerland.

Greg is a self-proclaimed "wellness junkie" who is especially interested in nutrition and alternative therapies (e.g., herbal medicine, massage, reiki). His other passions include reading, traveling, and spending time in nature. [ ghumpa AT lpfi DOT org ]


haoHao Lam, CPA

Chief Financial Officer

As Controller at Kapor Enterprises, Inc. (KEI), Hao manages the accounting and finances of LPFI. Prior to KEI, Hao spent 9 years in public accounting, 4 of which were with KPMG. He has experience in both tax and audit. During his last 3 years in public accounting, Hao worked exclusively with non-profit clients as a member of Hood & Strong LLP's Not-For-Profit Service Group.

Hao graduated from UCLA with a BA in Economics. He is licensed by the California Board of Accountancy and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Hao lives in Oakland with his wife and two kids. In his spare time, he likes to BBQ and ride his mountain bike.

saraSara Leedom

Director of Strategy and Development

Sara joined LPFI’s staff in 2007, and she works with LPFI’s board, volunteers and donors to ensure the organization has full financial resources to realize our mission. Prior to LPFI, Sara was Associate Director of Fund Development at the Corporation for Supportive Housing, working to raise grant and loan funds for permanent affordable housing with supportive services for homeless populations. She was previously Development Director for Clare Housing, Minnesota's first community development agency for low income people with HIV/AIDS, where she raised $6.7M in capital funding for the development of 30 units of affordable housing. Sara also directed youth programs for the National Association of People with AIDS, and the youth education program at Pro-Choice Resources in Minneapolis. She started fundraising at the National Women's Political Caucus in Washington, DC.

Sara served as a board member of the Alameda Point Collaborative, and is currently the Board Chair of the Prescott Joseph Center Community Center in West Oakland.  Sara lives in West Oakland with her dog Duncan, and she is learning to drum. Sara received her B.A. in English, with concentrations in linguistics and African literature from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA. [sara AT lpfi DOT org ]


VictoriaVictoria Robinson

Major Gifts Officer

In her role as LPFI’s Major Gifts Officer, Victoria Robinson is responsible for establishing closer ties between LPFI and the generous, committed people who make its programs possible. With over 17 years of fundraising experience for arts organizations and universities, Victoria brings a wealth of experience to LPFI.

Victoria earned her B.A. in English Literature and Fine Arts from Colgate University. A resident of Northern California for over 25 years, she enjoys photographing landscapes and people, reading, hiking, listening to music of all kinds, visiting art museums, trips to Fair Play, CA, and exploring East Bay neighborhoods with her husband, Charlie, and their two standard poodles, Pele and Stella. Victoria and Charlie have a son, Andrew, a dedicated football player and member of the jazz band at his high school in Berkeley. Terence HawleyTerence Hawley, J.D., Board Member

Terence is a partner at Reed Smith LLP, where he focuses on complex commercial litigation, including financial services, real estate and intellectual property cases. Terence earned his bachelor's degree and his J.D. from UC Berkeley. He has been involved with IDEAL since 2002, serving on the IDEAL board and the selection committee and speaking at IDEAL retreats. He has also introduced UC Berkeley alumni to IDEAL and the Level Playing Field Institute and has assisted in identifying summer internships for IDEAL scholars. Terence joined the Level Playing Field Institute board in late 2006.


Anula Jayasuriya, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., Board Member

Anula received a B.A. from Harvard summa cum laude, having worked under the supervision of renowned scientist and conservationist E.O. Wilson. She received an M.D. and Ph.D. (in microbiology and molecular genetics) from Harvard Medical School; and completed an internship at Children's Hospital in Boston before leaving for Harvard Business School, where she received her MBA. Anula's expertise derives from her unique combination of business, basic science, and medical knowledge. Her most recent work is in the field of life science venture capital.


mitch kaporMitchell Kapor, Board Member

Mitch is, to quote the New York Times, an elder statesman of modern computing. As founder of Lotus Development Corporation and the designer of the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet (the "killer application" for the IBM PC), he helped make the personal computer ubiquitous in the business world. He has been at the forefront of the information technology revolution for a generation as an entrepreneur, investor, social activist, and philanthropist.

Mitch is a co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (www.eff.org); the founding Chair of the Mozilla Foundation,
creator of the Firefox web browser; the founding Chair of Linden Lab, maker of Second Life, the leading online virtual world; and Founder and Trustee of the Mitchell Kapor Foundation (www.mkf.org)

Mitch has written widely about the impact of personal computing and networks on society. He has contributed articles, columns, and op-ed pieces on information infrastructure policy, intellectual property issues, and antitrust in the digital era to publications such as Scientific American, the New York Times, Forbes, Tricycle: The Buddhist Review, and Communications of the ACM. freadaFreada Kapor Klein, Ph.D.,
Founder

Freada has been working on issues of discrimination and diversity since the early 1970's. In 1976 she co-founded the first organization in the United States to offer comprehensive services, training, and consultation on the topic of sexual harassment to both the private and public sectors. After receiving her Ph.D. in social policy and research from the Heller School at Brandeis University, with an SSRC fellowship for the study of sexual harassment in federal government employment, she became the first Director of Employee Relations for Lotus Development Corporation. At Lotus, she was responsible for employee relations, affirmative action, management development and training, performance appraisal, and employee complaint channels.

After leaving Lotus, Freada launched her own business that allowed her to combine activism and research, and to impact the workplace. She became the President of Klein Associates, Inc., a boutique organizational development and human resource consulting firm dedicated to linking employee needs with business strategy, particularly regarding issues of employee diversity. The firm developed extensive experience in designing, conducting, and analyzing employee surveys, complemented by intervention in training, consultation, and policy development.

In this context, her research has included the design and analysis of numerous proprietary surveys for consulting firms, academic medical centers, corporations, health care institutions, law firms, and campus-wide surveys for universities. In addition to her work for individual organizations, she has conducted several landmark industry studies, including: an annual survey of quality of worklife issues in Internet start-ups, a survey of Fortune 500 manufacturing and service firms to determine the effectiveness of corporate efforts to address sexual harassment, a survey of gender bias and sexual harassment experienced by Massachusetts physicians and medical students, and the Demonstration Project on Diversity for the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. For many years, Freada also served as an expert witness in pivotal legal cases involving sexual harassment.

Freada has been has been interviewed for numerous publications, including: Business Week, the Chicago Tribune, Forbes, Fortune, the Harvard Business Review, the Los Angeles Times, the National Law Journal, Newsweek, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. Television appearances include: "The Today Show," "NBC Nightly News" with Tom Brokaw, "Prime Time Live," "Nightline," "The MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour," "20/20," "CBS This Morning," and "Good Morning, America."

Monica StevensMonica Stevens, M.B.A., Board Treasurer

Monica, a native Californian, grew up in Oakland. After graduating with a B.S. in Political Science from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, she served as an officer in the U.S. Navy. Afterwards, Monica worked in San Francisco as a project manager for a political consulting and lobbying firm, focusing on real estate issues. She subsequently received an MBA from the Walter A. Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley with a focus in real estate finance. While at Haas, Monica was a Consortium for Graduate Study in Management fellow. After graduation, she joined Wells Fargo and completed the Credit Management Training Program. She spent the next several years as a commercial real estate lending officer in the Capital Markets Group in San Francisco. Monica’s next opportunity at Wells was as the Director of MBA Recruiting for the Wholesale Bank where she focused on recruiting MBA’s from top-rated business programs and diversity organizations nationwide. She recently returned to the Capital Markets Group where she is a vice-president on the Originations side of the Syndications and Corporate Finance Group. Monica is currently active on several Boards that focus on diversity issues at the Haas School of Business.


Art WongArt Wong, M.D., Board Chair

Art has had a long history of service in the medical community. He was a board-certified practitioner of emergency medicine, and has been a twenty-year fellow at the American College of Emergency Physicians. While serving as the Director of Emergency Services at UCSF Mount Zion Hospital, Dr. Wong combined his business and medical skills as the president and CEO of the Emergency Physicians Medical Group. He subsequently led the Meriten Emergency Management Company in a similar capacity, and today continues to work with healthcare providers as a consultant, after retiring from Meriten. In the professional realm, he has been a member of the San Francisco Medical Society, the Medical Advisory Board of the Department of Public Health, and was a member of the San Francisco Emergency Care Committee.

Dr. Wong's civic leadership reflects his deep commitment to education, youth development, and access to college. He is currently the board president of the Huckleberry Youth Program and the IDEAL Scholars Fund, and was past board president of the California Tennis Club and Pi Alpha Phi Fraternity. Dr. Wong has also served as a trustee or board member of the Executive Board for the College of Letters and Science at UC Berkeley and for the San Francisco Day School.
