Apply to SMASH

Applications for  SMASH 2012 are open.  All registrations must be completed by February 23, 2012 and applications must be complete by March 1, 2012. Please read the eligibility requirements prior to starting your application.  NOTE: You MUST be in 9th grade this year to be eligible to apply.

SMASH Eligibility Requirements
SMASH Student Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following five criteria to be eligible for SMASH: 

1.  Ethnicity

  • Must be African American, Chicano/Latino/a, Native American, Filipino, Pacific Islander, Southeast Asian (i.e. Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, Vietnamese) or mixed race/multiracial with at least one parent from the above ethnicities.

2. Grade Level

  • Be in the 9th grade at time of application

3.  Math skills

  • Have strong mathematics skills appropriate for your grade level, as determined by the SMASH math assessment (which is administered to all SMASH applicants in March).

4.  Attend a public high school, or attend a private high school via scholarship.

5.  County Eligibility

  • Reside in California in one of the following counties: San Francisco, Marin, Solano, Contra Costa, San Joaquin, Alameda, Napa, Stanislaus, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, or San Mateo, to apply to Stanford or UC Berkeley sites.
  • Reside in California, in Los Angeles county to apply to UCLA or USC sites.

Expectations of SMASH Scholars
  • Be prepared to work hard, participate fully in all learning experiences, and contribute to building a positive and supportive community of students;
  • Commit to participating in up to three summer academies and workshops during the academic school year;
  • Provide semester grade reports and annual transcripts from school; and
  • Demonstrate a sense of social responsibility through school/community service activities or an awareness of community issues.

Selection Criteria

The best candidates for SMASH Academy will:

  • Demonstrate an in-depth curiosity in any math or science, and an interest in science or math-related studies, activities, or possible careers;
  • Be willing to live on campus, away from family, for 5 weeks in a community of other students, and be mature/stable enough to handle such a responsibility; and
  • Want to attend college and work to prepare for a competitive college admissions process.
