LPFI in the Headlines: New Workplace Research Released

In August 2008, LPFI conducted a nationally representative study of over 1,000 working adults concerning the impact of the presidential contest on race, age and gender relations in the workplace. When asked to suggest specific steps their employers could take to foster better working relationships across groups, the most popular response - stated by 24% of respondents - was that employers should treat people fairly based on performance and merit, irrespective of race, age or gender. Full data was released last week at a luncheon for corporate executives on how they can use this data to foster fairness in the workplace.

Based on survey data, Freada Kapor Klein and Martha Tae-Shin Kim's article "Are We Living In a Post-Civil Rights Era?" was published last week in the Huffington Post. For more information, contact Workplace Director, Martha Kim at [martha AT lpfi DOT org] or 415-946-3027.

IDEAL: Students You Can Believe In

LPFI's SMASH and IDEAL Scholars are now all back to school. This year our IDEAL Scholars program welcomed nine freshmen and eleven transfer students to our program at UC Berkeley. Our IDEAL family is now 66 strong, and we continue to provide scholarships, advising, and tutoring to each of these incredible under-represented students of color.

This summer many scholars participated in our IDEAL internship program. Scholars interned at organizations across the country, including Children's Hospital, Public Advocates, Mozilla, Morrison & Foerster, Hewlett Packard, Williams-Sonoma, Voto Latino (Washington, DC), and the Centers for Disease Control (Atlanta). We even had a scholar in Peru researching plant toxins. Thank you intern sponsors!

And good luck to all who are back in school!

LPFI founder Freada Kapor Klein will be the keynote speaker at this week's Anita Borg Institute’s “TechLeaders: Realizing Your Vision for Women of Color,” an exciting two-day workshop, September 10-11 at Google in Mountain View.

NSF research shows that women of color earn less than 9.4% of computer science and 7.1% of engineering Bachelors degrees and are all but absent from senior tech positions.

This workshop, specifically designed for entry to mid-level technical women of color in academia and industry, provides skills to help increase participants’ scope and influence while building their technical vision.
