SMASHcast

SMASHcast.org is an award-winning website and podcast channel produced by students from Level Playing Field Institute's Summer Math & Science Honors (SMASH) Academy. (external link)

Podcasts are like radio channels of the internet, and anyone around the world with access to a computer can create and listen to them. SMASHcast podcasts include reports on the environment and hybrid cars, reviews of tech gadgets such as the Skype mobile phone, and frank discussions about the pressures of public school life. Splicing in an occasional freestyle, live improvisation, and their perspective as youth of color, help to create a unique podcast channel.

The goals of SMASHcast are to:

  • Empower students to develop a real voice through podcasting, an emerging and exciting technology that is breaking barriers in the world of communications.
  • Provide students with an attractive route to continue to be engaged in and explore science and technology outside of their schools and classes.
  • Develop critical thinking, presentation, and creative skills through the process of creating interesting and compact audio report.
  • Build community with other students of color passionate about science and technology, showing students that they are not alone nor abnormal in their interests.
  • Remove stereotypes by redefining the images and sounds associated with the archetypical scientist and technology 'geek' as students produce radio programs on science and technology through the lens of their family, cultural, and public school life.
