College Admissions & Scholarship Workshops
The following workshops are offered during the academic year to assist scholars in preparing for college:
SCHOLARSHIP WORKSHOP – The hidden secrets of applications
Scholars and parents will learn how to the scholarship system works and how to avoid common mistakes that may mean the difference between receiving the award and being declined. Each scholar will develop a draft essay and be assigned a mentor during this workshop.
COLLEGE ADMISSIONS BOOTCAMP
For 2nd year scholars and families (Mandatory) and 3rd years (optional) an overview of the college admissions process will be provided. The discussion will focus on the various admissions requirements, with emphasis on how to make strategic decisions around course selection, standardized testing, and student development so that students are prepared for the admissions process and can maximize their college opportunities.
FINANCIAL AID 101
For 2nd year scholars and families (Mandatory) and 3rd years (optional) During this workshop, information will be presented on the various sources of financial aid that are available, completing the FAFSA/CSS Profile, applying for Cal Grants, and researching scholarships. In addition, students and parents will have the opportunity to ask questions so that they are better prepared to navigate the financial aid process.
MAKING AN INFORMED COLLEGE CHOICE AND 1:1 CONSULTATIONS
For SMASH Seniors and families only. During this workshop, we will compare financial aid award packages, review housing options, and discuss other aspects of the transition to college. The session will be conducted as an open forum during which scholars and parents have the opportunity to ask questions and receive coaching as they make their final college choice. In addition, scholars and families will have the opportunity to have a one-on-one individualized consultation to discuss financial aid packages, the intent to register process, and any other pending concerns they may have relating to the college process so that they are well prepared and informed when making their final college decision.
DEVELOPING AN ACADEMIC PLAN
For 2nd and 3rd year scholars and their families. During this workshop, scholars will research the academic requirements for several college fields of study. Scholars will then map out their class schedules to prepare and exceed these requirements. The Education Plan will serve as the roadmap toward attaining scholar’s goals.
