SMASH Academy is a unique 5-week summer program that will support your student to excel in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).  SMASH is only for Black, Latino/a, Native American, SE Asian, Filipino and Pacific Islander high school students and is currently held at the UC Berkeley and Stanford campuses in Northern California.  SMASH will provide year-round college prep support for your child, including scholarship application assistance. SMASH is dedicated to supporting high-achieving students of color to have the opportunity to succeed in college and beyond.

SMASH covers all necessary expenses for classes, food, housing, books, school supplies, and weekend activities.  SMASH provides all academic materials including books and all lab and technology equipment including a laptop for the duration of the summer program. SMASH is a program of the Level Playing Field Institute, which raises money to support every SMASH scholar.

The SMASH Academy does not cover laundry or incidental expenses. A student will typically need twenty dollars for summer laundry expenses.

When is SMASH 2012?

My child will be the first in our family to attend college.  Will SMASH help us?  Many SMASH scholars are first in their family to apply to college.  SMASH provides extensive support to your student and the family, including assistance identifying and applying for scholarships. 

How can I help my child become a SMASH Scholar?  Support your child in their interest.  Your son/daughter will need access to a computer with internet access in order to complete the online application.  If you do not have one at home, direct your child to their school or a public library. To be eligible for SMASH 2012 an application must be submitted on time. Applicants must register by February 23, 2012 and all applications must be complete by March 1, 2012. 

How is SMASH free of charge?  SMASH is a program of the Level Playing Field Institute, which raises all funds needed to support our scholars.  Level Playing Field Institute and our supporters believe that all talented students, regardless of race and socio-economic status, should have the opportunity to be academically prepared to apply to, and graduate from, top colleges and universities.

When can I visit my child? SMASH scholars will have designated free time on weekends to visit with family.
