SMASH Expansion

SMASH offers proof that with access to high-quality educational opportunities and role models with high expectations, students of color excel in STEM fields.  Without access to these critical resources, students are denied the opportunity to develop the skills that grant them access to the highest-paying jobs and upward mobility. 

In its first phase of development, Level Playing Field Institute refined the SMASH model to ensure that our students utilized the educational opportunities of SMASH to secure admission to college and pursue their STEM passions. 

Having codified our operations and demonstrated consistently strong, positive results, we are ready to expand our reach and bring SMASH nationwide.  SMASH Academies were held on the UC Berkeley and Stanford campuses in Summer 2011 and will likely be also held on campuses in Southern California and on the East Coast in Summer 2012.

Expand this Opportunity!

SMASH Advisory Councils

LPFI’s Stanford Advisory Council helped us to launch SMASH Academy on the Stanford campus in 2011.

SMASH: Stanford

SMASH Academy at Stanford University campus in Palo Alto, California began in summer 2011 with 80 scholars.

SMASH: Stanford will again have 80 SMASH scholars in summer 2012, and will run from June 30 - August 4, 2012.  Meet the 2012 Site Director, James Sarria and the 2012 Residential Director Katiana Carey-Simms. 

SMASH: UC Berkeley

Since 2004, SMASH has been on the UC Berkeley campus. Scholars live in the dorms, take classes and use labs at the University.  The residential environment simulates the college experience so that when scholars do begin college, they are prepared. 

SMASH: UC Berkeley will have 80 scholars in 2012 and will run from June 23 - July 28, 2012.
